FIELD TRIP POLICY

One of the primary missions of the Capital Area Native Plant Society is to expose members to a wide variety of native ecosystems and their constituent plant species. We do that by visiting parks, nature preserve, and private and public gardens.

Field Trips can be an extremely rewarding, but you must also be properly prepared to avoid logistical mishaps, or worse, being stranded or left behind. Here are a few pointers:
  • RSVP is required to ensure proper planning and communication before and after event
  • Contact Trip Leader prior to trip if you will be arriving early or late or with any other questions
  • Arrive on time for departure.
  • Carpool! It's cheap and green and helps reduce the chaos and impact of vehicles in natural areas and private residences.
  • Wear appropriate clothing to be outside and in the elements. Long pants and hiking boots are generally recommend to protect legs from briars and biting insects.
  • Know the schedule and be prepared to leave when scheduled. Out of respect for our hosts and other attendees, we need to stay on time as much as possible. Understand, however, that sometimes events beyond our control cause the schedule to lag. If you are planning to arrive for only one portion of the field trip, please contact the field trip leader before hand.
  • Know your limits. Some hikes venture into remote areas with difficult terrain. Ask about options if you have limitations.

Packing List

Essentials
  • Map with directions to all destinations in the itinerary
  • Sturdy shoes / hiking boots
  • Water! We recommend a reusable water bottle
  • Sun/rain protection (check the weather!)
  • Insect Repellent
  • Snacks + packed lunch or money for lunch (check the itinerary for lunch arrangements)

Recommended
  • Field Notebook + Pencils
  • Camera
  • Field Guides
  • Cash in case you need to buy plants or other goodies

Carpooling

CANPS offers carpooling as an option for many of our long distance trips, but you are responsible for contacting the trip leader to let them know you would like to carpool. We cannot ensure that we have room in our vehicles unless you contact us and if we do not know that you are coming, you may be left behind. It is also helpful to follow up with the trip leader by email or text the day before the trip to confirm that you will be riding.
